This play is fantastic as it’s a fake bubble screen, in an attempt (in this case successful) to lure the defense to the open man in “the flat” (the bubble), whilst simultaneously stretching the field with a receiver against less defensive backs. “The Flat”: Otherwise known as a flat route, usually run by a running back or full back, but can include a wide receiver. The player will run parallel to the line of scrimmage towards the sideline, and then turn around to present himself for the pass. In some cases, if run by a receiver, the receiver may simply wait at or behind the line of scrimmage, and then open himself up as an option for the quarterback.
